Our heroine’s backstory
I was delighted to learn that Elizabeth Klett–the talented voice actress I’ve worked with on the audiobooks for With This Curse, Cursed Once More, and Nocturne for a Widow–will be releasing free audio performances of vampire stories on every Friday in October! Elizabeth says she was inspired by my recent post on favorite vampire stories, and her first selection is E.F. Benson’s delightfully creepy “Mrs. Amworth.” Listen to it on her site. I’ll continue to update this post throughout the month as Elizabeth releases more vampire tales. If you’d like to learn more about Elizabeth and her recordings, check out the interview here. Happy listening!
Week two: “Luella Miller” by the underrated American author Mary Wilkins Freeman.
Week three: “Good Lady Ducayne,” part one, by Mary Elizabeth Braddon.
As 2014 closes, it’s fun to look back at the year and also note the new things that are afoot. The year was bookended by, well, books! Early in 2014 I released my second Victorian romantic suspense novel, With This Curse, and I’ve just released another, Nocturne for a Widow. It stars the irrepressible actress Sybil Ingram, who was introduced as a supporting character in With This Curse.
The year also saw some exciting acclaim for my books. My young adult novel Among the Shadows received an honorable mention in the Reward of Novel Excellence YA paranormal romance category; With This Curse was a finalist in the OK-RWA International Digital Book Awards; and Sea of Secrets was named a Shelf Unbound Notable Indie book.
Some old friends are getting new clothes, too! With This Curse has a stunning new cover by Bookfly Design, and one for Sea of Secrets is coming soon.
I’m excited about what 2015 holds, and I hope it will be a happy, healthy year filled with lots of good reading for all of us.
My new historical gothic romance is now available! With This Curse is a thrilling tale of mystery and romance set in 1873 Cornwall. If you enjoyed my previous gothic, the highly acclaimed Sea of Secrets, or if you’re a fan of romantic suspense classics like Jane Eyre and Rebecca, you won’t want to miss it!
In With This Curse, seamstress Clara Crofton gets a second chance at happiness… or peril. Eighteen years ago, the curse on Gravesend Hall killed the man she loved and forced her into a hostile world alone. Now she has the chance to return to Gravesend as the bride of the heir, Atticus Blackwood. But is the curse finished with Clara, or does it pose an even greater danger to her heart–and her life–than before?
With This Curse is available on ebook at Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com, and a paperback edition will follow later this month. I hope you love reading Clara and Atticus’s story as much as I loved writing it. The two of them became dear to my heart as I told their story, and I hope you’ll fall in love with them as well.
I’m thrilled to announce that With This Curse, my new historical gothic romance, will be released soon! If you enjoyed Sea of Secrets, you’ll enjoy this new story from the gothic side of Victorian England. Some of my favorite gothic romantic conventions are at play here… but I can’t say which ones, because that would spoil the suspense! Head on over to its new page and check out the synopsis, the breathtaking cover by the Killion Group, and the Pinterest board link. It’s been a busy summer, but I’ve finally finished “On Shadowed Wings,” the first Ash Grove tie-in short story. It works fine as a stand-alone if you haven’t read the novels (for shame!), but if you’re already familiar with the characters, you’ll get a kick out of seeing them about ten years before the action of The Shadow and the Rose takes place. You can download the epub here (On Shadowed Wings) or have your choice of formats at Smashwords–again, all free!
I’m also delighted to announce that Sea of Secrets won the 2012 RONE (Reward of Novel Excellence) award in the mystery category from InD’Tale magazine! Isn’t it pretty?

Last night the finalists in the 2012 RONE (Reward of Novel Excellence) awards were announced, and I was thrilled to find that both my nominated books made it to the final round–Sea of Secrets in mystery, and Casting Shadows in young adult paranormal! The winners and runner-ups will be announced on August 9 at the Romance Novel Convention. I’m up against some really fine books, but I, like many an Oscar nominee, can say in all sincerity that it’s an honor to be nominated. And now my two finalist books get nice shiny badges for their covers! Thank you to all who voted for me, and if you feel like crossing your fingers for me in this judging round, I’d appreciate it.
Lots has been going on lately, and I wanted to make sure everyone is in the loop! Right now the Ash Grove paperbacks are undergoing a tiny face lift and will be unavailable through the standard sales channels (Amazon, BN.com, CreateSpace) for a little while. If you need one before they re-emerge shyly into the sun, just email me. The updated versions will be done by the time UtopYA con comes around at the end of June; I’ll be signing there, so do drop by my table if you’re attending. I’ll also have tons of great Ash Grove swag and merch, including rowan pendants and “Joy” and “Maddie” fragrances!
More fun news: the audiobook of Sea of Secrets is very nearly ready to make its debut! Talented voice actress Meghan Lewis is lending her skills to Oriel’s story, and I think you’ll be delighted with the result. If you long for windswept Victorian landscapes and brooding heroes, this is the (audio)book for you.
Camp NaNoWriMo comes around in July, and I’ve decided to participate this year. Last year I started but dropped out early on; this year I’d like to acquit myself better and complete a draft of my next novel. All encouragement and pom-pom-waving is welcome! And in August you’ll find me and my books at the fabulous AJC Decatur Book Festival, the biggest independent book festival in the country. If you can stand the Georgia heat, come on out!
Now is a fantastic time for you and your book-loving friends to catch up with the Ash Grove series! To celebrate the release of book three, through Friday, April 12, the “Casting Shadows” ebook is on sale for only 99 cents, and “The Shadow and the Rose” is only $1.99 in ebook (both are at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords). That means you can get all three ebooks in the series for under $6! Amazon has also marked down the paperback edition of both books by 10%. (I don’t know how long that’ll last, though–they didn’t discuss it with me, lol.) *And* all month long if you post an Amazon or GoodReads review of one (or all!) of the Ash Grove books, you can enter my Rafflecopter giveaway to win fantastic prizes—$25 Amazon gift cards, signed Ash Grove books, or a fantastic swag package!
Book three of the Ash Grove Chronicles, Among the Shadows, is now available in ebook! This book wraps up the first three-volume arc of this generation of Ash Grove characters–but I have grown to love them so much that I suspect I won’t be able to keep from writing more books about them. If you, too, have come to love Joy, Tanner, Maddie, and William, you’ll find book 3 a wild and captivating ride. Enjoy–and look for news of a paperback release in April!
